Senior Nurses “Eat Their Young”

It’s a phrase you most likely heard of or experienced. Nurses who consider themselves more experienced treat new nurses with a cold shoulder. They may initiate in bullying of such nurse.

I have seen nurses engaging in this behavior as a nursing student to new graduates and have experienced it myself.  It is hurtful and makes it hard for new nurses to gain confidence. Here are some reasons why I believe senior nurses “eat their young”.

The senior nurse may feel as though the new nurse carries up to date nursing skills.

Nursing can be stressful at times. It can take a toll on nurses physically, mentally and emotionally. This can cause nurses to become cold, bitter and apathetic.

The senior nurse may have had experienced the same behaviors when they where a new nurse and feel obligated to continue the harassment and bulling.

Books I am reading this month:

I Wasn’t Strong Like This When I Started Out: True Stories of Becoming a Nurse
